The lotus flower was the basis for this costume design by Eiko Ishioka. The headress had moveable fans to reveal the Princess's identity.We had to find the exact same red fabric as Eiko had used for Gary Oldman in Dracula and get it embroidered in New York.

These guys made up the evil army. A Victorian medical X ray outfit, as seen in the film, is transformed into a child's nightmare. Made of leather and worn with under suits, the 100's of Indian extras we had were incredibly resiliant to the heat!
Based on the character Darwin. Eiko Ishioka designed this costume using traditional Victorian garments and then wanted a coat resembling a butterfly. Each hair was hand inserted, taking hours of intense work...Leo Bill, the actor was amazingly patient wearing this costume in the 110 degree heat we faced during filming in India...and as for keeping his white outfit clean...!
With the African slave character, Eiko Ishioka and Tarsem, the film's director, wanted to show off the actor's physique whilst mixing it up with graphic lines and African tribal styling.
Precise period costumes were recreated for the 1905 Californian hospital scenes.
